The Couples series was taken at a time when LGBTQ people did not have the right to marry, showcasing the dual perspective that informs how queer couples live in the United States. Queer people walk the line between existing as a distinct social group and conforming to society. In a society in which terms like “lesbian” and “trans” are often used within political and social constructs, we overlook the myriad ways in which these couples exist in our society.
